PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has vowed to deal with retailers abusing the government’s subsidy programme meant to cushion citizens against the rising cost of basic commodities.Under the subsidy programme, Government has identified seven basic commodities that will be supported to ensure availability to the general public at affordable prices. So far mealie-meal (roller) is enjoying the subsidy. However, some unscrupulous retailers are charging above the ZWL$50 gazetted for a10kg roller meal bag.Responding to calls by thousands of residents who thronged the Kuwadzana 2 centre for the National Clean Up campaign, President Mnangagwa said he was aware of retailers over-charging, and his administration will not hesitate to withdraw their operating licences.“We instructed that the price of mealie-meal be reduced but I’m told some retailers are still overcharging, as Government we have ways of dealing with them including withdrawing their operating licences. We have also identified seven basic commodities that shall also benefit from the Government subsidy. The subsidised basic commodities shall be available in our silo shops which we are rolling out across the country; we already have the money in place for the silo shops so be rest assured that silo shops are coming."The President also assured residents that school fees in government institutions, will not be hiked.Turning to the clean-up campaign President Mnangagwa said cleanliness starts at an individual level. He also urged local authorities across the country to provide residents with the necessary tools to ensure effective disposal of litter.President Mnangagwa said he was aware that the local authorities did not have sufficient resources to serve their communities but adequate sites must be identified in residential areas for the disposal of litter. The Nationl Clean Up campaign is the brainchild of the President and commenced in December 2018.
