Heal Us Zimbabwe has launched a drug abuse awareness campaign walkathon.
Speaking from Harare ahead of the walkathon, the Founder Columbus Mushore said the walkathon is a journey of hope.
"It is both a privilege and a duty to stand before you as we launch the Plumtree to Harare Drug and Substance Abuse Awareness Walkathon. Zimbabwe, like many nations, is grappling with a devastating epidemic of drug and substance abuse. Our youth, families, and communities are being eroded and torn apart by the scourge of addiction. From the streets of the City Capital to the villages, lives are being lost, potential is being squandered, and futures are being stolen. The statistics are alarming, but behind every number is a human story—a mother’s tears, a father’s despair, a young person’s broken dreams. As a nation, we cannot afford to remain silent," he said.
"This walkathon is not just a journey of kilometers; it is a journey of hope, solidarity, and action. From Plumtree to Harare, we will walk to raise Awareness, Mobilize Communities, Demand Policy Action and Restore Dignity. We cannot win this fight alone. We call on the Media to Amplify this cause. Your voices can shape public opinion and hold leaders accountable."
The 544 kilometer walkathon will be completed in 23 days with stops in key towns to engage communities.
Workshops and testimonies from survivors will be part of the showcase as the organization takes a step toward healing the various communities.
He added that "journalists are not just observers; you are catalysts for change. How you frame this crisis will determine how the nation responds. Tell the stories of struggle, but also of resilience. Highlight the problem, but also the solutions."
He said it is time for Zimbabweans to rise and walk together, not just as individuals, but as a nation determined to reclaim its future. Together, we can heal Zimbabwe."
