03 Mar 2020First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa's Dura ramambokadzi concept has successfully completed the nationwide rollout with distribution of traditional small grain seeds to 90 chiefs' spouses from Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central.The First lady Amai Mnangagwa through her foundation, Angel of Hope is reviving the Dura ramambokadzi concept, where the chief' homestead will be central in alleviating poverty and effects of drought in communities.The chief’s homestead, will become central to the growing of traditional grains and gardens, which will cater for the elderly and disadvantaged in the community.Addressing chiefs and their spouses, First Lady said the adoption of traditional seed grains will help the country alleviate effects of climate change induced drought and establish food security for the communities and country.Amai Mnangagwa highlighted that the people have run away from the traditional identity which resemble our culture, with need to resort to our traditional foods for good health among the people.She encouraged the growing of traditional small grains, saying the success of such community based initiatives needed collective effort."I have brought these small grain seeds to help boost the Dura ramambokadzi, as we know it's a focal point where the sick, the elderly and the needy go for help, so this will go a long way in boosting food reserves in the communities," she added.“We have run away from our identity, we must resort to our traditional food,” she added.She said spouses of chiefs are the custodians of the culture and community, therefore have lot of responsibility which includes feeding the community.She said although the climate is changing, it was time to divert to traditional grains so as to counter the effects which cause recurring droughts in the country and continent.The First Lady also facilitated funding of projects for the chief`s wives, with the introduction of funding through the Women’s Bank and Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development.In accepting the First Lady' concept, chiefs wives representative, Mai Nechombo, wife of Chief Nechombo from Mashonaland East echoed the need to complement First Lady`s initiatives in order to alleviate hunger and poverty in communities.The chiefs spouse were handed over sorghum, millet seeds and vegetables seeds for gardening.
