The country was this morning, awaken to the shocking news of the untimely death of yet again another gallant son of the country who fought and defended for the country’s freedom, Commander Zimbabwe National Army Lieutenant-General Edzai Absalom Chakanyuka Chimonyo.
The death of the late Lt General Chimonyo comes barely a week after the burial of the late Major General (Rtd) Chiramba at the National Heroes Acre.
The news of his passing on was announced by Presidential Spokesperson George Charamba who wrote on his Twitter handle to say, “Devastated to announce the passing of General Chimonyo early this morning after a long fight against cancer. Go well freedom fighter, Commander and Ambassador.”
Writing on their twitter handle, ZANU PF official advised that the Party leadership will make further announcements on the matter:
“Sad news. We have lost a liberation struggle stalwart and Commander in ZNA, Cde Edzai Chimonyo. The nation has been plunged into mourning once again, barely a week after the loss of Major General (Rtd) Chiramba. The Party Leadership will guide us on any further announcements. May His Soul Rest In Peace,” ZANU PF wrote
Lt General Chimonyo played a great part in the liberation Struggle. He held several appointments between 1980 and 2008 in different brigades, Army and Defence Headquarters before being appointed as Ambassador to Tanzania until 2017 when he took over from General Phillip Valerio Sibanda in 2017 who had been promoted to Commander Defence Forces.
