MALAWI PRESIDENT CHAKWERA JETS IN FOR A STATE VISIT

Malawi’s newly elected President Lazarus Chakwera jets into the country today on a two-day state visit which is expected to cement relations between the two nations.   Chakwera who represented what is believed to be Malawi’s revolutionary party Malawi Congress Party MCP joined forces with United Transformation Movement UTM leader Saulos Chilima, forming an Alliance in preparation for the June 2020 Malawi General elections. Chakwera won the elections and took office this year taking over from the Democratic Progressive Party DPP which had ruled the country under the leadership of Peter Mutharika.   President Chakwera’s visit feeds into Zimbabwe’s engagement and re-engagement policy which seeks to work together to transform the lives of their citizens. His thrust resonates with that of President and First Secretary of ZANU PF Cde E.D Mnangagwa whose vision is to better the lives of the people of Zimbabwe. The State-visit is expected to avail the opportunity for the two leaders to share notes on such.     Zimbabwe’s enemy has however also seized this opportunity through the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation CHRR and Youth and Society YAS to take advantage of the State-visit seen through the letter they wrote to President Chakwera this week urging him to “use the State visit as a platform to send a clear message that the actions of the government of Zimbabwe are inherently at wide variance with the agreed norms of democratic governance and call upon them to address fundamental domestic challenges whose effects are disastrous on its people and the region.”   The decision entirely lies with the two leaders to bow to the pressure of the elements seeking to destabilize their economies or otherwise.
