Zimbabwe is benefiting from the dividends of its 5.0 education system during this #covid19 pandemic, thanks to innovation hubs created at the various Higher and Tertiary institutions. Despite being viewed skeptically by usual naysayers, when it was introduced, the programme launched two years ago has seen various universities coming up with great innovations on artificial insemination and ventilators prototype among others. Speaking about how these skills have come in handy during this COVID19 pandemic, Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Professor Amon Murwira, said Zimbabwe is reaping the benefits of the programme. “In December 2017 when the New Dispensation under the leadership of President ED Mnangagwa asked us to look at the country’s education model which was using the 3.0 of reading and writing, it was clear that Zimbabwe was ready for something bigger hence the introduction of the 5.0 education model,” Professor Murwira said. “In fighting COVID19, innovations at the University of Zimbabwe have resulted in the making of 50 000 theatre caps, 20 000 overshoes and 20 000 plastic aprons in four days. The University also has produced 5 000 litres of sanitizer and has a capacity of producing 4 000 litres an hour. An educated nation is seen in the number of products and goods it has. All products don’t fall by accident. Our education must be seen in action”  Professor Murwira disclosed that Bindura University and Great Zimbabwe University, Chinhoyi University of Technology, Midlands State University and National University of Science and Technology have also produced face masks, protective clothing and sanitizer. NUST has also gone a step further in that it is in the process of assisting COVID19 testing working in conjunction with Mpilo Hospital.
