The Miners For Economic Development is making inroads in advancing eco-friendly mining methods in Zimbabwe.
The organization's National Executive was recently in Muzondiwa, Mapanzure, in the Midlands Province to check on their pilot rehabilitation programme.
Speaking about the progress, the organization's Cde Dru Edmund Kucherera, the National Vice Chairman and Spokesperson, said the pilot project is almost finished.
"The National Executive was in Mapanzure to check on the progress done in rehabilitating the land. At least 2000 holes have been dug for the tree planting exercise, and we are 70 percent done. What remains is for us to drill boreholes, which we intend to be solar powered and fencing off a fish pond so that the community can benefit," he said.
"We want to acknowledge the support we are receiving from the Forestry Commission, Environmental Management Agency, Fidelity and Kurimba Mining House, the Secretary of Mines in the Politburo, the Commissariat Department and our Ministry of Mines. We are expecting more stakeholders to come on board so that we can make this a success.
The First Lady, Her Excellency Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa is expected to be our Guest of Honour at the official commissioning because she is the ZANU PF Politburo Secretary for Environment and she is also an Ambassador for the Environment, Climate Change, Tourism and Wildlife in Zimbabwe."
He added that the organization wants to "join hands with her in mitigating the pollution that miners cause to the environment and as Miners for ED we thought we could mitigate the pollution and play an important role in teaching Miners how to have eco-friendly and sustainable mining methods. We are hoping that when this pilot is done, we will move to other provinces.
