25 February 2020Zimbabwe is strongly responding to the acceleration of Sustainable Development Goals and shaping the future of ordinary citizens and Africa at large , a senior government official has said.Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing sixth African Regional forum on sustainable development goals, Minister of Public Service, Labour Social Welfare, Prof Paul Mavhima said Zimbabwe had taken great strides in implementing the benchmarks on which SDGs will sail on which will see the transformation of ordinary citizens.Prof Mavhima also said in demonstrating commitment, the government of Zimbabwe has simplified the 17 SDGs into five Ps which will transparently monitor the attainment of the goals."The SDGs forum has come to Zimbabwe this year and it is very important as we are reviewing where we are on the implementation of all the 17 SDGs and at the same time we are saying we have noticed where we are in accordance with the action agenda because the secretary general of the United Nations has said this is the decade of action, thus 2020 to 2030."We are going to consider what actions we are going to do in the various areas covered by the 17 SDGs."You remember we have reduced the 17 SDGs to what we call 5 Ps and under People for example one of the Ps is education, health and we want to see where Africa will be in terms of quality education and health care and whether we reach the target as far as reaching the attainment of the SDGs." said Prof Mavhima.Prof Mavhima also added that the education sector has a pivotal role to play in the implementation of the sustainable development goals and moreso the young people need to participate strongly and play an active role for the betterment of Africa.
