Traditional leaders' spouses’ health and empowerment training, which was first hosted by Mashonaland West Province, will spread to other provinces in a bid to promote healthy living and development in communities.The inaugural Mashonaland West training left the traditional leaders' spouses confessing that the workshop was an eye opener and were ready to put into practice what they learnt.The workshop, an initiative of First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa, witnessed Ministry of Health and Child Care experts, church leaders, counsellors, businesspeople, among other speakers take the participants through various important topics which affect people every day.The second day saw heart-breaking issues which include infertility, abortion, early child marriages, gender-based violence and its impact on society among other issues.In her remarks to conclude the workshop, which was also graced by traditional Chiefs and headmen, First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa spoke of her passion for women and youths empowerment. The First Lady also bemoaned the increasing trend of teen pregnancies and abortion.The First Lady spoke strongly against abortion after the participants told her that it was happening in their communities and that it was worrisome to note that in most cases parents or relatives of the victims were involved .She urged communities not to hide problems affecting the girl child.“You should be the societal police as elders in your areas,” said Amai Mnangagwa.First Lady said mothers should encourage young children to wait for the right time before engaging in sexual activities.And she acknowledged the significant role traditional leaders played in the communities, urging them to continue being the custodians of African values and norms.She underscored the need for chiefs’ wives to be given access to portions of land for them to plant small grains.Speaking on behalf of Chiefs, Chief Ngezi (Peter Pasipamire) praised the First Lady saying the wise counsel which thier spouses receive will help shape the communitties they are living in.Amai Mnangagwa handed over sanitary wear to the Chiefs' spouses to distribute to less privileged girls in their communities.The participants also walked away with an assortment of foodstuffs.
