ZANU PF National Chairperson and Minister of War Veterans Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri says a fund will soon be established for reburials of heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for the country. With an estimated 50 000 people said to have been killed during the liberation struggle as they fought to free the country from colonial rule, many survivors of the gruesome attacks Many gallant sons and daughters of the soil lie in shallow graves while others in mass graves at Doroi, Tete, Mavhonde, Tembwe and Chimoio among other places. Sipho Mlambo a materials and production officer with the Curriculum Development and Technical Services department in the Primary and Secondary Education Ministry says it is the duty of those who remain alive to properly bury the dead. “Since we revere death in the indigenous religion, it is the duty of the living to properly bury their member. Whilst there were incidences in the past or present where delays in burials can occur, conflict resolution would compel people to run around and make sure one gets descent burial. The failure to do so, would seem as neglecting the deceased, hence it would matter even where someone is buried,” Mlambo said. “The manifestations in people would then be proof of the living dead and how it is important even to the living dead to be buried where their own are buried. While the Christian think that the manifestations are an evil spirit which needs to be exorcised, it shows that lack of understanding of indigenous culture.” The Fallen Heroes Trust’s national chairperson Dr Arthur Makanda says the establishment of the fund will make their work easier. “We have been using borrowed and donated funds to embark on the work that we have been doing. The establishment of this fund will help us move around easier, acquire coffins and equipment for exhumation. Meanwhile war veterans have called upon relevant authorities to consider the promise made to those left behind during the struggle for liberation. The month of August is a very special month when we remember those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom which we enjoy today. The men and women forgo their education and their jobs to fight for a free Zimbabwe. Speaking during a meeting held with the ZANU PF National Chairperson at the Headquarters, sentiments from Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans' Association (ZNLWVA), Zimbabwe National Liberation War Collaborators (ZILIWACO), Zimbabwe Ex-political Prisoners Detainees and Restrictees Association (ZIPEDRA).
