ZANU PF Information Department The Harare-Beitbridge road construction and rehabilitation national project started in earnest in 2019 with the appointment of five local contractors. The road is being given a lease of life and the new vision of the new dispensation being guided Minister Biggy Matiza officiated the opening of the completed Chivhu road section of the Harare- Beitbridge Highway on the 8th of June 2020, fully done The Construction of a detour on the Chivhu section was initiated in November 2018 and the completion of this Chivhu section adds on the Beatrice section which is already open to traffic. A total of 7.2km has been rehabilitated "I am advised that the total cost of the constructing the Chivhu section was ZWL 75 Million. The work is not yet finished and at least 30km of the Harare - Beitbridge road will be surfaced and opened to traffic The quality of work especially on the Beatrice section has already proved the test of time which is highly commendable. Cde Matiza thanked the Engineers and notably the management in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development for the hard work, team spirit and for coming this far in developing the nation's roads especially the part of the awaited Harare-Beitbridge Road rehabilitation and construction project. 80 locals from Chivhu area were employed on the road rehabilitation project. The Harare-Beitbridge road construction projects involves rehabilitation, construction and widening of the road to 12.5m in line with the Southern Africa Transport and Communication Commission SATTC standards from the current 7 meters. Such a new highway is key as it connects the North to South corridor enabling international trade and safe mobility of the people. Zimbabwe is now living in a new normal ever since the declaration of covid 19 pandemic as a national disaster In May 2020 as the indefinite level 2 lockdown was extended Therefore the road construction projects countrywide that were stalled due to the pandemic are now showing a hive of activity. Whenever there is a national disaster, resources are channelled Minister Biggy Matiza concluded by reminding people that yearly goals are not achieved at the end of the year because of the calenedar days but due to daily routine works which must not be neglected. He also encouraged people to take heed to the call of President E.D. Mnangagwa to focus on production.
