GVT WORKING ON A CONTRACTORS BILL

Government is working on a Contractors’ bill which will protect contractors and regulate the construction industry, revealed a Cabinet Minister. ZANU PF Legislator for Murehwa North and Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities Daniel Garwe said this at a meeting he had with Contractors in Bulawayo on this week. “It’s the only sector open to invasion locally and “There is need with our sober minds to participate fully. I promise you I will do my part. It’s an opportunity for you to have a bill that protects your interest. It must be made law before December this year. We are doing it for future generations. We are so vulnerable to invasion and abuse.” The proposed Bill will ensure that the highest standards are upheld in the industry and fly-by-night contractors will be weeded out. It will also provide guidelines on such matters as to who can go into the construction sector, tendering procedures, procurement guidelines, terms under which foreign contractors can operate in the country among other things. Minister Garwe went on to discourage the contractors from engaging in corrupt activities and to do the right thing. He said they should never offer bribes.
