By Ndafadza MadanhaGOROMONZI High School which falls under GoromonziNorth Constituency is the proud host of the governingZANU PF Party 18th National People’s Conference runningunder the theme ‘Modernise, Mechanise and Grow theEconomy Towards Vision 2030’.Besides hosting the Conference for the second timeGoromonzi High has a rich history in the country’s strugglefor independence as it was the breeding ground for leadingnationalists in the mould of Cdes Simon Mazorodze, StanMudenge and Sydney Sekeremayi, among others.The Goromonzi North seat has traditionally been astronghold of ZANU PF and was comfortably retained inthe 2018 harmonised elections by Cde Ozias Bvute.Since taking office in 2018, Cde Bvute has followed theexample of servant leadership set by His Excellency,President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Through the implementation of various national broadbasedempowerment programmes facilitated by the Party,manyhouseholds in Goromonzi North can attest to now havinga more sustainable future.Goromonzi North successfully launched the CommunitySkills Development Programme in June this year.“Through the support and guidance of the NationalChairperson, Cde Oppah Muchinguri—Kashiri and theMinister of State, Cde A. Munzverengwi, Goromonzi Northboast over 21 bakeries with the capacity to produce anaverage of 1 500 loaves of bread and 3 000 buns a day,”Cde Bvute said while commissioning a bakery in CeylonMine, Vhuta Ward.The industrious have seen opportunities in the ancillarybusinesses that accompany bread production. Mr Chitekero of Chinyika Ward is one such individual andnow offers an oven building service to other constituenciesin and around the province. One of the constituency’s long standing programmes ischicken rearing. Households either sell off the eggs, hatch them to increasetheir flock or consume them as part of their nutritionalintake.The MP has developed a strategic alliance with a companycalled National Organic Produce (NOP), which acts as atechnical partner and a ready market for the birds. “As we re-engage and open Zimbabwe up for business,these communities will become an important part of thesupply chain for global markets,” added Cde Bvute.‘Grow A Life’ is a project that was launched in August thisyear as a natural progression from the chicken rearingprogramme.The programme establishes demonstration plots andgardens where best agricultural practices are utilised andtaught.Cde Bvute also assists with extension services andsourcing for markets for the produce that comes fromthese gardens. There is currently a garden in every wardwith Rutope Garden in Ivordale Ward being the mostsuccessful, thanks to the commendable efforts of CdeKatiyo, Chairman of the Youth Wing at Rutope FarmBranch, Ivordale District who is an active member of theRutope Community Garden Collective. Cde Katiyo growscucumber, butternut, baby marrows, onions, tomatoes,rape and covo. Schools like Chinyika Secondary and Primary and Arcturushave also benefited from this programme and producefrom these gardens is currently being used in the Ministryof Education’s supplementary feeding scheme. The country requires an estimated US$14 billion to closethe existing gaps in infrastructure and the Party madea commitment to address this deficit by promotinginfrastructure investments in energy, transport, housing,water and sanitation.Taking a cue from this vision, Goromonzi North hasembarked on an Infrastructure Development Programmethat cascades from the national one. With the support ofthe local farming residents and business communities;several roads have been rehabilitated, damaged ZESAsubstations repaired and over five boreholes drilled acrossthe constituency.Working closely with the Youth League, Cde Bvuteestablished Brick Brigades in 2018. These are brick moulding clubs to which Cde Bvuteprovides implements ranging from wheelbarrows shovels,picks, work suits, gloves, food and firewood. Upon completion of production of the bricks, the youthsretain 30 percent for resale or own use and 70 percentgoes to developing the local community e.g. constructionof clinics and schools. Nearly 200 000 bricks have been produced under thisprogramme and many of the bricks were donated tocomplete the building of schools and churches in theconstituency.Mwanza Secondary School is one such school that has aclassroom block built using bricks from the programme.At Gosha Secondary School, a house for staff is at windowlevel, all built by bricks from the Brick Brigade. Goromonzi North is also fully committed to the Presidentsvision to improve health service delivery in line with theSustainable Development Goals and has been workingwith local clinics to improve health delivery throughprovision of mobile doctors and a mobile pharmacy. Over 6 000 patients have been attended to and receivedbasic medication. With this vision in mind, the MP also hasinitiated programmes that seek to empower women andgirls. Cde Bvute has also availed a revolving fund to boostexisting savings clubs. Members of the community-based savings and creditscheme (SACCO) access the fund to finance their variousindividual and group projects. This programme has been extremely beneficial tomembers of the Women’s League who have used thesefunds to start home industries and other businesses. One such beneficiary is Cde Ezabela Nombe, Chairpersonof Mwanza District who has successfully started a homeindustry that supplies candles, petroleum jelly, dishwasher,bread and buns to the community and surrounding areas.
