The 2020/21 Presidential Agricultural Input Scheme will target farmers that have embraced the Gatshompo/Pfumvudza concept as part of Government’s broader efforts to enhance food security in the country. This was said “Government introduced the Gatshompo/Pfumvudza initiative. So far the Province has trained 270 Agricultural Extension officers on the programme. Each of these officers is expected to train 350 farmers which gives a target of 94 500 farmers across the Province to be trained,” Cde Moyo said. “I need to highlight that Government has targeted these trained farmers for the 2020/21 Presidential Agricultural Inputs Scheme. I therefore urge all our farmers to participate in this scheme as it is key to boosting our food security.” Speaking during the same meeting the Minister of Finance and Economic Development Prof Mthuli Ncube said Government is targeting to initiate 1.6 million households under the Gatshompo/Pfumvudza concept during the 2020/21 cropping season. “Food security at every household is key towards turning around the economic fortunes of the country. In that regard, Government is promoting the adoption of the Gatshompo/Pfumvudza concept as a strategy to enhance food security at household levels,” Prof Ncube said. “We are targeting 1, 6 million households to embrace the farming concept under the 2020/21 cropping season.” Meanwhile, Matabeleland North Province planted 489 hectares against a targeted 500 hectares under the Government Winter Wheat Programme. “Towards the Government’s Winter Wheat Programme, the Province has managed to plant about 489 hectares against a targeted 500 hectares. With the expected average harvest being seven metric tonnes per hectare, the Province targets 3423 metric tonnes of wheat. This will boost the national wheat reserves,” Cde Moyo said. Cde Moyo also rallied the Party’s leadership to support the Government initiative to rehabilitate Bulawayo Kraal Irrigation in Binga. “Government through the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement working with ARDA has identified an investor. The project implementation needs our support as the ZANU PF Provincial leadership. We have to have unity of purpose for the benefit of our communities.”
