The Ministry of Health has dispels fears of a COVID-19 virus following a flu-like illness which has been witnessed across the country.
Exhibiting symptoms as that witnessed during the COVID-19 period, many have rushed to conclude that they may be suffering from that illness. People have been resorting to home remedies such as ginger, lemon and garlic concoctions while others have taken antibiotics amongst traditional medicines such as zumbani.
Cabinet today received a report on the current influenza-like illness in Zimbabwe, as reported by the Honourable Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora and has advised that the recent increase in influenza-like illness experienced in the last few weeks is due to a seasonal increase which is usually experienced in the country and region as we approach the winter season.
"This is not a COVID-19 outbreak, but a seasonal phenomenon experienced during the winter season. There were more influenza cases at the same period in 2023 (149 000) compared to 2024 (99 000)," he said.
"Zimbabwe has not recorded a single COVID-19 case in the last 4 weeks. People are however encouraged to wash their hands, avoid large crowds, cover mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and stay at home when there are symptoms of the disease."
