Today the Zimbabwean government signed the compensation agreement with the Commercial Farmers Union bringing closure to the land issue in the country. The Land Reform Programme came about as a result of the liberation struggle which saw many gallant sons and daughters of the soil being killed while others were maimed. This historic mark comes days before Zimbabwe celebrates Heroes and Defence Forces days which are set aside to remember the sacrifices of the brave men and women. The Land Reform Programme witnessed many turns in the past with the disgruntled white farmers not only allowing for negative publicity to befall Zimbabwe and resulting in a downward turn of the tourism sector but a closure of many companies rendering many locals jobless. The illegally imposed sanctions were another spin off from the bitter West who have not tired since to make the Zimbabwean economy scream. The SADC Tribunal in Namibia where many of the disgruntled white farmers took their case tried to resolve the issue but to no avail. Tweeting about the development, President and First Secretary of ZANU PF Cde E. D Mnangagwa expressed his appreciation of the signing highlighting that the move brings closure. "Today the Government of Zimbabwe signed a historic compensation agreement with the Commercial Farmers Union, bringing closure and a new beginning to the history of land discourse in Zimbabwe," President Mnangagwa said. "The agreement re-affirms the irreversibility of land while serving as a symbol of our commitment to the rule of law and property rights. It is a testimony that as fellow Zimbabweans, we can peacefully resolve our problems. " We cannot change the past. We can only learn from it. In this spirit, let us choose dialogue over confrontation and let us move forward, together."
