25 February 2020President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called upon the African policymakers to seriously accelerate the mitigation to climate change citing that it is the major modern challenge affecting the continent.Officially opening the 6th African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development Goals in Victoria Falls, President Mnangagwa said the African continent contributed less to climate change yet it was the most affected continent."The African continent contributes less to climate change yet it is the most severely affected continent."Mitigation of climate change must be prioritised in line with the Paris Agreement. Climate Change is real, as evidenced by droughts that are ravaging our continent." said President Mnangagwa.President Mnangagwa also reminded the forum of the devastating cyclone Idai that affected Southern Africa last year and immensely destroyed infrastructure and lives of ordinary people."In Southern Africa we experienced the wrath of climate change in cyclone Idai and Kenneth in 2019 as well as the recurring droughts. For Zimbabwe, the ripple effects of climate change have affected every sector of our society with dire consequences to our food security, hydro power generation and cummulatively, projective economic recovery andgrowth." said President Mnangagwa.The President also emphasised that climate change mitigation must take centre stage more so the continent also needs to invest in the renewable energy projects."The mitigation of climate change and increased alternative renewable sources of energy are essential for the continent's mordenisation, industrialization and the rural penetration of power.Initiatives and mechanisms must be enhanced to build sustainable governance and financing structures through greater collaboration between countries' financiers and developers of clean energy projects"said President Mnangagwa.President Mnangagwa also said Sustainable development in Africa cannot be achieved without comprehensive socio-economic development and in Zimbabwe, the Second Republic is fully committed in implementing the political, economic and legislative reforms.
