These are the fruits of the land: Cde Nguluvhe

By Margaret Kamba

The loss of over 150 cattle during the previous drought taught farmer Cde Albert Nguluvhe to work strategically.

His farm in Bubi District has over 200 cattle and a high quality breed of heifers, weaners and steers, which farmers from other regions have begun buying.

He has for a while also been using the science in his cattle breeding programme to empower the surrounding areas to also breed these "good-to-look-at" and heavily massed cattle.

The breed in his kraal is not only dehorned but smart herd can easily grow him the numbers he wants because to him, it's about the maths and science.

"There was nothing here when I began some years ago. The first cattle I bought were with the 50 000 dollars that we got as war veterans. This along with 150 others bought later grew me a herd that I have. I fuse the simmental and Braman because I am after the mass because we are commercial farmers," Cde Nguluvhe said.

"Everything here has no debt. These are the fruits of land. If I didn't have land, where do you think I would be doing all this? We have formed an association to help improve the breed for the people within my community. We were given tractors by His Excellency, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and we will use these for hay bailing."

Like for any other farmer, there are challenges.

"The issue is feed. This is why I am trying to grow my own feed. It's very easy to grow a herd but because of the loss from the drought, I am targeting to have only 150 steers a year."
