Repatriation Committee making strides

By Margaret Kamba

The Repatriation Committee is making strides in its efforts to repatriate the remains of the First Chimurenga heroes.

The Committee made up of family members to the 27 heroes are determined to see their family members given proper burial in their homes.

Remains from these heroes among them Ambuya Nehanda, Chingaira, Mapondera among others were taken as trophies abroad as the colonizers sought to derail the pursuit of freedom from colonial rule by the locals.

However, long after the death of Ambuya Nehanda many of the gallant sons and daughters of Zimbabwe rose up to fight for the liberation of their country and brought home the freedom.

Speaking after the Repatriation Committee meeting held at the ZANU PF Headquarters, Politburo member for Gender and Culture Cde Thandie Mukusha said there is some progress recorded.

"There is slight progress recorded on the Repatriation of the remains of the First Chimurenga. What we know from the visit to the United Kingdom museum is that the Zimbabwean remains are not labeled and therefore there is a need to conduct DNA tests. Meanwhile the Repatriation Committee is conducting visits to spiritual mediums across the country in order to inquire on the repatriation issue."

Many other efforts apart from this one to bring in heroes of the Second Chimurenga are being made by the Fallen Heroes Trust along with the families who have continually suffered as their family members seek to be awarded a befitting burial.
