Our collective bricks will build Zimbabwe: President Mnangagwa

By Margaret Kamba

His Excellency, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has challenged all Zimbabweans to take a leaf from heroes such as the late National Hero Dr Engineer Sydney Gata who was laid to rest today, to build Zimbabwe.

The late National Hero died after a short illness on the 3rd of July.

Speaking during the burial at the National Heroes Acre this Wednesday, President Mnangagwa said Dr Gata never forgot being Zimbabwean.

"Many who lie here fought in our protracted liberation struggle against the brutal colonial regime," Cde Mnangagwa said.

"Over the years, a new breed of heroes continues to be honoured who have distinguished themselves in various areas of society including in post-independence Governmental administration, diplomacy, as well as in commerce and industry. No matter the fields, those who ascend to this revered hill, stand as a towering symbol of true patriotism, selfless dedication and persistent commitment to our motherland, Zimbabwe.

"In spite of a promising career overseas, the late Dr Gata never forgot his motherland. He was an unflinching patriot, who recognized that he had a role to play in building the Zimbabwe that so many young boys and girls had died for during our liberation struggle. Thus, after Independence, he returned home and taught in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe.

"I challenge more of our people from across the social strata to be inspired by the traits of patriots, such as the late Dr Gata. No matter what you achieve in life; no matter how educated you may be; no matter how successful you are; whether here at home or abroad, never, ever forget that you are a Zimbabwean, you are African. We all have responsibility to build our country and Continent. Our individual and collective bricks, sector by sector will build the Zimbabwe we all want. Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevene vayo. Ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabanikazi balo."
