Let's be proud of our culture: Archbishop Makururu

By Margaret Kamba

As Zimbabwe continues to celebrate the Culture month, Johane the 5th of Africa International Church Founder Archbishop Dr Andby Makururu has encouraged the people of Zimbabwe to take pride in that which makes them a people.

This year's culture day is being celebrated under the theme 'Celebrating Indigenous Voices and has been running from May 1 to 31 as part of efforts to promote national identity, cultural pride, and social cohesion.

Speaking during an interview, Archbishop Makururu said most of the problems the indigenous people face nowadays are due to the rejection of their culture.

"We as black people have a right to remember and promote our culture (hunhu/ubuntu). This culture allows for the preservation of our identity as a people. It is sad that our children no longer know how our culture. My children are not able to know their totems, milk a cow and do other things that we grew up doing because we no longer promote our culture," he said.

" Rape cases have increased because of the failure to respect the elderly and crossing of boundaries. Promoting our culture however instills dignity in us as we know to respect our mother or father and avoid crossing the lines."

The church uses all its platforms to promote culture through the exhibition of cultural clothing and the promotion of cultural values.
