Fidel Castro Road inaugurated

By Margaret Kamba

Vice President and Second Secretary of ZANU PF Cde Kembo Mohadi and Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa have inaugurated the Fidel Castro Road.

The inauguration took place at a colorful ceremony witnessed the unveiling of the plaque in honor of the role that Fidel Castro played during Zimbabwe's liberation struggle.

Speaking during the event, Vice President Mohadi said Zimbabwe will always be grateful to Cuba.

"Zimbabwe has fond memories of the role that Fidel Castro played and will forever be grateful for the support we received from Cuba during our protracted struggle," Cde Mohadi said.

"At that time, Cuba took up our struggle as theirs by training our combatants providing arms and other materials. Renaming this road as Fidel Castro Road is, therefore, a small gesture that we feel will help appreciate the special bond and relationship between our sisterly countries."

Also speaking at the same event, Vice President Valdes Mesa said the relationship between Cuba and Zimbabwe dates back to the liberation struggle when Cuba sent weapons and personnel.

"As a continued expression of our solidarity, we continued cooperating with Zimbabwe by sending teachers to enlighten and grow the knowledge of the Zimbabwean people, then the doctors came to heal," Vice President Mesa said.

"We are deeply moved by the official inauguration of this road being named after our father in this beautiful and vibrant city of Harare. He walked this street in 1986 during the 8th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement.

"Please allow me to thank on behalf of the people of Cuba, the authorities of Zimbabwe for this noble gesture for the legacy of our historic leader in thus nation."

Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa also took time to lay a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown soldier at the National Heroes Acre.
