Communing with God through dance: Binya

By Margaret Kamba

Dance is a form of art and communicates emotions deep within the mind and heart. This is why people appreciate ballet, imbube, isitshikitsha and mbende Jerusalema amongst other dances.

This art can perhaps also be found in all the churches except for a few, for reasons best known to themselves. After all, the Bible talks about the importance of dancing for the Lord since it is in praise where God's glory resides.

The particular dance that caught my attention was that by the Johanne the 5th of Africa Creative Arts Ensemble. The dance pattern and coordination arouses anyone's emotions as they are glued to the expression and passion displayed.

In my conversations with Emmie Binya, I did discover that indeed behind the dance is a message.

"When we dance we express ourselves through these cultural dances. We look at how our people used to communicate with their God before colonisation and it was through song and dance. This is how they used to ask for the rain and thank him. This would result in them getting answers to their prayers," Binya said.

"We showcase different types of culture because of our link with the different cultures and His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa has good relations with all these countries. This way when the church members from these countries come can feel at home."
