Zimbabwe is preparing for a potentially challenging 2026/27 summer rainfall season, with Government warning of below-normal rainfall amid forecasts of a very strong El Niño weather phenomenon.
The forecast for the October 2026 to March 2027 rainfall season was presented during the Post-Cabinet Briefing, highlighting the likelihood of a generally drier season, characterised by erratic rainfall, prolonged dry spells and above-normal temperatures.
According to the seasonal outlook, the first half of the season, covering October to December 2026, is expected to receive predominantly below-normal rainfall across much of the country. However, some areas of Matabeleland South and Masvingo could experience near-normal rainfall, particularly during December.
The outlook for the second half of the season, from January to March 2027, also points to predominantly below-normal rainfall. The northern and eastern parts of the country are expected to remain drier than normal, while parts of the south and west may receive near-normal rainfall.
Government cautioned that the expected El Niño conditions could result in an unpredictable rainfall pattern, with rainfall likely to be unevenly distributed across the country. Communities may therefore experience periods of intense rainfall followed by extended dry spells, presenting challenges for agriculture, water availability and livelihoods.
The anticipated higher temperatures could further increase pressure on water resources and agricultural production, making early preparedness and efficient management of available water particularly important.
Government has consequently directed ministries, departments and agencies to put in place appropriate contingency and emergency response measures to mitigate the potential socio-economic effects of the anticipated weather conditions.
Farmers and communities have also been urged to strengthen water harvesting and conservation measures, while making prudent use of available water resources. The emphasis is on preparedness and building resilience ahead of what could be a difficult rainfall season.
The Meteorological Services Department will continue to provide updates and further guidance as the 2026/27 rainy season approaches, enabling Government, farmers, businesses and communities to make informed decisions based on evolving weather conditions.
The seasonal outlook underscores the importance of preparedness across the country as Zimbabwe moves into the agricultural season, with Government calling for coordinated action to minimise the potential impact of prolonged dry conditions on food production, water supplies and the broader economy.
